What things have gone wrong with the car?Gasoline mileage. Excessive stickers on sun visors. Dumb choice of second language on those stickers. Cruise control light not subject to dash light dimmer control. Transmission roughness at initial accelleration.
General comments?Other than the poor gas mileage and a few small things, I'm mostly pleased with this 2002 V6 Tundra SR5 extended cab model. However, I have less than 5K miles on it at this time and that's not enough to have a refined opinion about the vehicle.
I drive "conservatively" yet get less than 15 mpg in town and about 19 on the highways, where the speed varies between 65 and 75 mph on good roads. Here in Phoenix we have no choice but to use "oxygenated" fuels during winters, and I agree that that reduces mileage a little, but certainly not 20%, as the dealer claims.
There often is a disturbing roughness when accellerating from a stop, such as is necessary when trying to merge into traffic on a busy street. The problem disappears as soon as accelleration drops. The dealer says "they all do that", and I consider that answer to be very unsatisfactory.
And the awful sunvisor stickers! SIX of them on the two visors, in English and French. One in French only! (In the US, I'd expect maybe to see the second language be Spanish, but never French.) The stickers cannot safely be removed without defacing the visor covering material.
On the current 2002 Tundra, no mechanical problems so far, but as said earlier I still have less than 5K miles on it. I've seen other reviews mentioning brake problems of the Tundra's. On my 1995 T-100, the Toyota dealer changed the disk brake pads twice during the first 20K miles, and none of those Toyota pads worked well after a short while. Finally, I bought some US-made pads (Raybestos, I think they were), and installed them myself, then all the brake problems went away.
So, what's the bottom line as I see it? Well, for the purposes I had in mind in buying this truck, I believe the Tundra is the best of the currently available alternatives. It isn't even close to perfect, but it's it is very worthy in comparison to Ford, GM, and Dodge.
